PROJECT DESCRIPTION
SICs (Separation, Isolation, Collaborations) Degrees is a collaborative visual arts project that will upskill, network, exhibit and generate income for Townsville and Australian artists, and engage audiences (including optional participation). The project riffs off the spread of COVID-19 by instead enabling exponential collaboration. Artist and curator Danish Quapoor instigated the project by nominating 2 artists, who in turn nominated 2 artists, and so on. Quapoor then curated pairings of the artists to collaborate in a chain. The diverse group of sixteen artists will each (a) initiate one two-dimensional artwork, and (b) complete one artwork. The artworks will be presented in an exhibition at Murky Waters Studio and online experience in November 2020. Audiences will also have the chance to download and complete the artworks for potential inclusion.
Read about the artists here, or view / download the unfinished works to collaborate on by clicking here.
HOW DID SICs DEGREES ORIGINATE?
Townsville-based visual artist and curator Danish Quapoor (artist pseudonym of Daniel Qualischefski) has a strong history of collaboration and curating self-funded collaborative projects. He has curated / co-curated five collaborative exhibitions and is working on a sixth with two long-term artist collaborators (SICs Degrees will be his seventh). Quapoor’s most recent collaborative exhibition collaberration saw the lead artist collaborating with 17 Australian and international artists via post. The development of coronavirus (and its impact on Townsville's and Australia’s cultural and creative scenes) has had a creative impact on Danish for a number of months, and provided the artist with inspiration for this new project. The graphics of COVID-19's exponential spread were particularly formative. Danish Quapoor is excited to deliver SICs Degrees with the support of the Regional Arts Development Fund (RADF) in Townsville. This ensures the artists get paid as well as receiving the project’s opportunities of networking and exhibiting.
